About Noctie
Noctie is a personal AI chess coach with a human touch: a chess AI trained on over a billion human games to play like a person at your level, grade every move you make, and turn your mistakes into puzzles. It is made by Noctie AB, a small team based in Sweden, and has been in development since 2021.
What it is for
Online chess is exciting and competitive, but it can limit real learning. The app is built as a relaxed training space where you are in control: play a sparring partner that mimics human play from beginner to grandmaster level, get instant color feedback on each move, practice openings and endgames, and review flashcards generated from your own games. It runs in the browser and as the mobile apps on iOS and Android with one synced account.
Milestones
- 2021 — Noctie AB starts building it.
- 2022 — Noctie is shown on Hacker News as “a chess AI that predicts your rating”.
- 2023 — a neural network trained on human games instead of self-play: the goal isn't the best move, it's the move a human at your level would play.
- Today — 100,000+ learners on web, iOS and Android; 4.7 out of 5 on the App Store (606 ratings) and 10K+ downloads on Google Play; a public roadmap shaped by players.
The name and the owl
The mark is an owl — two round eyes and a raised brow — and the name itself echoes nox, noctis, Latin for night. The night owl is the bird that sees clearly when others don't, which is a fair description of what a good coach does for your chess.
